The book, subtitled "One Woman’s Ultimate Sacrifice for the Jews" is a fictionalized diary of Jane Haining, a Scottish missionary who in the 1930s went to Hungary to be the matron of a girls home. It then follows her through the invasion of Hungary to when she died in Auschwitz.
When Smith learned of Miss Haining, a distant relative, from her mother, she felt compelled to tell her inspirational story. She traveled the world researching details and walking in Jane’s footsteps to dig out the facts of her life.
